Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen Reflect on Their Grumpy Adolescent Mr. Darcy Portrayals

WEB Stars Reunite to Discuss Iconic Roles

"We Were Both Teenagers When We Played Mr. Darcy," Firth Recalls

In a recent interview, Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen, who both famously portrayed Mr. Darcy in different adaptations of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," shared their insights on their performances and the challenges of capturing the character's grumpy demeanor.

"When I played Mr. Darcy, I was just 24 or 25," said Firth, who took on the role in the 1995 BBC miniseries. "I was very much a grumpy adolescent myself at the time."

Macfadyen, who played Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film adaptation, echoed Firth's sentiments. "I was only 18 when I got the part," he said. "I was trying to be as brooding and aloof as I could, but I think I came across as just a bit of a sulky teenager."

Despite their youthful portrayals, both Firth and Macfadyen have been praised for their nuanced performances as Mr. Darcy. The character's grumpy exterior and gradual transformation into a loving and devoted partner have resonated with audiences for generations.

"I think what makes Mr. Darcy so appealing is that he's not perfect," said Firth. "He's flawed and has his moments of arrogance, but he also has a kind heart and is capable of great love."

Macfadyen agreed, adding, "I think that's why people relate to him. We all have our moments of grumpiness, but we also want to be loved and accepted for who we are."
