Early Life and Education

James David Vance was born James Donald Bowman in Middletown, Ohio, on August 2, 1984. His childhood was marked by poverty, drug abuse, and family instability. After graduating from high school, Vance joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Iraq from 2003 to 2005.

After his military service, Vance attended Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy. He then attended Yale Law School, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 2013.

Political Career

In 2014, Vance authored the best-selling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis." The book became a national bestseller and was adapted into a Netflix movie in 2020. Vance was a candidate for the United States Senate from Ohio in 2018, but was defeated by incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown.

NPR Podcast Host

In 2018, Vance launched the NPR podcast "Hillbilly Heartbeat," which explores the culture and politics of white working-class America. The podcast has been praised for its thoughtful and nuanced approach to a complex and often misunderstood topic.

Personal Life

Vance is married to Usha Chilukuri, a lawyer and former federal prosecutor. They have three children together.
