FSU safety Shyheim Byer and 2 reserve LBs Out for Boston College

**Tallahassee, Fla. —** Florida State football will be without starting safety Shyheim Byers for the second straight game due to a head injury. The redshirt senior did not make the trip to Boston College with the team on Friday. Linebackers Kalen DeLoach and Stephen Dix Jr. also won’t play in Chestnut Hill as each recovers from an ankle injury. All 3 players were injured in the Seminoles’ season-opening win against Duquesne. FSU also lost starting cornerback Renardo Green, a transfer from Mississippi, to a season-ending knee injury in that game. Green and Byers are team captains this year.

”We’ve had some guys go down and other guys have to step up,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said. “That’s an opportunity for us to continue to grow as a football team.” In Byers’ absence, sophomore Sidney Williams has started at safety each of the last 3 games. Akeem Dent has taken over Green’s starting cornerback spot, starting each of the last 2 games.

DeLoach’s injury leaves FSU with just 2 scholarship linebackers available for the Boston College game. True freshman DJ Lundy is expected to start at outside linebacker opposite Tatum Bethune. Redshirt sophomore Omar Graham Jr. has been working at middle linebacker in DeLoach’s absence. The Seminoles are thin at linebacker, safety and cornerback. True freshman Azareyeh Thomas has been practicing at safety and will likely serve as the backup to Williams. Sophomore Brendan Gant could also be an option at safety, but he has primarily played cornerback this season. Junior cornerback Kevin Knowles played sparingly in the 1st 2 games, but he has been taking 1st-team reps this week. He could start on Saturday, though Dent remains the favorite to start. FSU is a 10.5-point underdog to Boston College. The game will be televised on the ACC Network and will kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Conclusion

FSU will be without several key players in Saturday’s game against Boston College. Byers, DeLoach and Dix are all starters, and Green is a key contributor. Despite the injuries, FSU coach Mike Norvell remains confident in his team.
