North Face Makes History
Completed Successful Mount Everest Mission
On May 29, The North Face athletes Alex Honnold, Hilaree Nelson, Conrad Anker, and Melissa Arnot had successfully summitted Mount Everest, completed their first phase of their mission.
The historic expedition’s main objective is to establish a new route up the East Face of Everest, and then ski down from the summit.
The legendary alpine team faced challenges as they braved treacherous terrain, enduring frostbite, and wind chills reaching -100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mission in Progress
The North Face Team spent two months acclimatizing and preparing for their audacious attempt.
On May 13, they established their base camp at 17,600 feet, and began their ascent of the East Face, using fixed ropes to navigate the treacherous Khumbu Icefall.
Over the next few days, they established four camps along the route, each one higher than the last.
Risks of Descent
The team had finally summitted Mount Everest on May 29, but their mission is not yet complete.
Their goal is to ski down from the summit, a feat that has only been accomplished by a handful of skiers.
The descent is extremely dangerous, as the skiers must navigate steep slopes, crevasses, and unpredictable weather conditions.
World Record Attempt
If successful, The North Face team will set a new world record for the first ski descent of the East Face of Everest.
They will also be the only team to have ever climbed and skied down from the summit of Everest.
The team is currently preparing for their descent and is expected to attempt it within the next few days.
